Goals to Accomplish the Mission

• Work to improve the local economic base by helping existing business to grow and expand and recruit new business.

• Help increase permanent employment opportunities by seeking to recruit new businesses in target industries, especially ones that can create synergy with existing businesses.

• Work with local, state and federal funding sources to assist business with loans and investment.

• Work with agencies to rehabilitate business and identify industrial locations.

• Promote appropriate increased commercial, agricultural, recreational and industrial economic growth.

• Assist businesses in obtaining technical assistance.

Mineral County Day at the Legislature

Each January, local businessmen and members from Mineral County government and civic organizations travel to the state capital in Charleston for the opening of the legislature.  In concert with county representatives, delegates and commissioners, their purpose is to meet with lawmakers and present their case for improved business legislation.

Co-produced by the Mineral County Chamber of Commerce and the Mineral County Development Authority, the event begins the night before at a hospitality suite and the televised governor's state of the union address. The following day, the group meets with department heads and staffs of transportation, economic development, tourism, health and human resources, agriculture, art and history, education and others depending on the issues that resonate most with the county each year. The county also sponsors a luncheon for all state legislators at the capital and an gala evening reception. Each year many companies send representatives, contribute displays and informational materials at this evening event to highlight the best of Mineral County, its municipalities, business and recreational opportunities. It is an outstanding networking opportunity.

Of the 55 counties in West Virginia, Mineral County is the only one to host a Day at the Legislature. Event planning begins several months in advance and each year a united position on issues that affect the county is developed and approved. This enables the Mineral County contingent to present a stronger, well-prioritized agenda directly to the lawmakers.

In 2010, Mineral County Day at the Legislature celebrated its 10th anniversary. In that time Mineral County has been able to obtain funding, grants and development assistance loans for a variety of infrastructure projects. This cohesive effort has also led to economic development assistance and legislative action that has created a more business friendly environment and a more interesting, healthy, attractive community.  Examples include: 

• Phase I of the Northern Mineral County Sewer project
• Support for the upgrade to the U.S. Route 220 connecting I-68 with Corridor H
• Sidewalks and a community building in Ridgeley, WV
• Fire protection in Elk Garden, WV
• Water projects in Keyser and Piedmont, WV
• Construction of the Memorial Bridge connecting McCoole, MD. and Keyser, WV
• Financial support for community swimming pools and municipal parks, historic preservation, drug and alcohol addiction follow-up facilities and highway improvements throughout the county
