Historic Preservation

Active Historical Societies, (Mineral County and Frankfort District), the Mineral County FoundationMineral County Geneaological Society, Landmarks Commission, and Daughters of the American Revolution play a significant role in the county’s historical preservation in terms of genealogical research, historical documentation and restoration of historically significant properties.

The Mineral County Historical Society is currently undertaking the restoration of Carskadon Mansion in Keyser and Traveller’s Rest on U.S. Route 50 (the Northwestern Turnpike) between Burlington and Keyser. The DAR maintains Fort Ashby, the only one of George Washington’s line of western frontier forts still standing in Mineral County. Stewart’s Tavern, not far from Fort Ashby is maintained by the Frankfort Historical Society. All are open to the public on a seasonal basis.

Nancy Hank’s (mother of Abraham Lincoln) birthplace, is located on private property in the Antioch area of Mineral County. It is open to the public and maintained by the Mineral County Historical Society. The location may be seen from the Saddle Mountain Scenic Overlook located on U.S. Route 50 near Elk Garden.

The Landmarks Commission seeks to identify historic structures and locations in the county for inclusion in the National Historic Register. Several buildings in the county have been so designated and their locations in various communities throughout the county are available from the Mineral County Chamber of Commerce. The community of Burlington is listed on the National Historic Register.
